Welcome to Willow Class (Year 4).
Teacher: Mrs Sarah Coxon
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Judith Bowker, Mr Matthew Houston, Mrs Theresa Younger
In Willow class, the children continue to build on all the fantastic learning experiences from Cherry class. It is an exciting year filled with engaging topics such as the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Ancient Egyptians in history. We enjoy historical workshop sessions in both the autumn and spring terms where Viking and Anglo-Saxon ‘visitors’ come into school. In science, we learn about electricity, digestion, states of matter and sound where learning is always practically based. The children also get the opportunity to start school swimming lessons as well as learn to play the ukulele with Mr Scott who is a highly skills peripatetic music teacher.
Our PE days are on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Children come to school wearing PE kits on these days.
In late autumn, the children take part in Forest School sessions with Mrs Smith who is a highly experienced Forest School practitioner.
In the summer term, we visit Cuerden Valley Park to do river studies. This is great fun paddling in the water to measure the depth and speed of the water. We also do some bed panning activities – searching for gold!
At KWPS, we aim to foster a love of reading. Children are encouraged to read daily in school and at home. We have a wide selection of books in our library and class reading area which the children can choose from. Every half term, we focus on a new class novel such as the Water Horse, Matilda How to Train your Dragon and Mr Stink.
In addition, children are expected to learn spellings and times tables regularly at home. In June, the children take the Multiplication Tables Check test. This is a national test for all Year 4 children and is completed on a tablet device. Children can practise for this test using MTC - Multiplication Tables Check - URBrainy.com
Our classroom environment is calming and nurturing. The children enjoy 9th birthday stickers, balloons, golden time with table football, a pool table and ping pong. The children can work towards Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and credit card certificates linked to their dojo points awarded for wonderful work and behaviour. At the end of every half term, we settle down to a movie linked to our work in English and enjoy popcorn and snacks.
I look forward to supporting and encouraging your child’s learning throughout their time in Willow Class.
Thank you.
