Welcome to Cedar Class
Welcome to Cedar Class! We are delighted to welcome you to Year 2, the final year of Key Stage 1. This is an exciting year where children continue to build on the excellent foundations established in Elm and Apple Class while preparing for a smooth transition into Key Stage 2.
In Cedar Class, we provide a happy, supportive and engaging learning environment where every child is encouraged to develop confidence, resilience and independence. We bring learning to life through practical activities, outdoor learning, educational visits and exciting visitors, ensuring children develop a love of learning while continuing to Belong, Believe and Be the Best They Can Be.
Throughout the year, children enjoy a broad and ambitious curriculum including English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Computing, Music, RE and PSHE. Our learning is enriched through memorable experiences that help children make meaningful connections and create lasting memories.

PE
Our PE lessons take place every Monday and Friday.
Children should come to school wearing their full PE kit on these days:
- Red KWPS PE T-shirt
- Red school jumper or cardigan
- Black shorts
- Black tracksuit bottoms (weather dependent)
- Black trainers
Please ensure all clothing is clearly named. For health and safety reasons, earrings should be removed before school on PE days and long hair tied back.
Our Learning
Learning in Cedar Class is exciting, practical and designed to prepare children for the transition into Key Stage 2.
Throughout the year, children enjoy a broad and ambitious curriculum that encourages curiosity, creativity and independence.
In History, we investigate How Has Kirkham Changed?, compare the reigns of King Charles III and King Henry VIII, and discover how and why the Titanic sank.
In Geography, we explore Our Local Area, investigate Weather in the UK, and learn how we can Save Our Oceans.
In Art, children develop their creativity through drawing, sculpture and collage, experimenting with different materials and techniques.
We also bring learning to life through memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, children enjoy exploring landmarks in Kirkham, making Christingles at our local church as part of our RE learning, visiting the SEA LIFE Centre and the RNLI Lifeboat Station in Blackpool as part of our Seaside topic, and welcoming the Fire and Rescue Service into school to support our PSHE learning.
Reading is at the heart of everything we do in Cedar Class. We have close links with Kirkham Library and enjoy regular visits to discover new books, develop our love of reading and research topics linked to our learning across the curriculum.
Forest School
During Summer 2, Cedar Class takes part in weekly Forest School sessions linked to our learning about Plants and Habitats.
These sessions provide exciting opportunities for children to develop teamwork, resilience, independence and problem-solving skills while exploring and learning within the natural environment.
Homework
We believe that regular practice at home helps children develop confidence and independence.
Reading
Children should read for 10–15 minutes every evening. Please sign your child's Reading Record each time you hear them read. The Reading Record also contains useful guidance to support reading at home.
Spellings
Weekly spelling activities are sent home to reinforce the spelling patterns and vocabulary taught in class.
Times Tables
Regular practice on Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars helps children develop fluency and confidence with multiplication facts in preparation for Key Stage 2.

We love sharing the children's learning and achievements throughout the year. Regular updates, photographs and important information will be shared through Class Dojo, so please check in regularly to see what we've been learning and to keep up to date with class news.
