Welcome to Rowan Class! We are delighted to welcome you to Year 6, the final year of your child's journey at Kirkham and Wesham Primary School. This is an exciting and memorable year, filled with opportunities for children to develop confidence, independence and leadership as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.
In Rowan Class, we provide a happy, supportive and ambitious learning environment where every child is encouraged to challenge themselves, achieve their very best and create lasting memories. Alongside preparing for the end of Key Stage 2 assessments, children enjoy a broad, engaging curriculum, exciting enrichment opportunities and a range of responsibilities that help them grow into confident young people, continuing to Belong, Believe and Be the Best They Can Be.

PE
Our PE lessons take place every Tuesday and Wednesday.
Children should come to school wearing their full PE kit on these days:
- Red KWPS PE T-shirt
- Red school jumper or cardigan
- Black shorts
- Black tracksuit bottoms (weather dependent)
- Black trainers
Please ensure all clothing is clearly named. Earrings should be removed before school on PE days and long hair tied back.
Our Learning
Learning in Rowan Class is exciting, challenging and designed to prepare children for secondary school. Throughout the year, children enjoy a broad and ambitious curriculum that develops their knowledge, skills and understanding across all subjects.
In History, children explore how people from our past have shaped our present through the topic From Cotton to Coast, investigating the importance of the cotton industry in Kirkham and its impact on our local area. They also discover the achievements and influence of Ancient Greece through From Mountains to Myths, before learning about the remarkable contributions of the House of Wisdom and how it transformed knowledge, science and learning across the world.
In Geography, children investigate why Blackpool became one of Britain's most popular seaside resorts, explore how land use has changed our local area, study mountain ranges and the impact they have on surrounding environments, and examine how advances in technology have influenced the global distribution of resources, wealth and knowledge.
Our Art curriculum encourages creativity and self-expression through painting inspired by Banksy and Jean-Michel Basquiat, sculpture influenced by Grayson Perry, and printing techniques inspired by Bridget Riley.
In Design and Technology, children develop practical skills by designing and making moving vehicles, preparing and evaluating pita bread, and constructing traditional games.
Reading remains at the heart of everything we do in Rowan Class. Through high-quality class texts, guided reading and independent reading opportunities, children develop fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and a lifelong love of reading.
Forest School
During the Autumn Term, Rowan Class takes part in weekly Forest School sessions.
These sessions encourage children to develop confidence, resilience, leadership and teamwork while learning in the natural environment and applying practical outdoor skills.
SATs
During the Summer Term, children complete the national Key Stage 2 SATs, marking the end of their primary education.
The 2027 Key Stage 2 SATs will take place during the week commencing Monday 10th May 2027.
Throughout the year, we prepare children through high-quality teaching, regular revision and opportunities to build confidence in reading, grammar, spelling and mathematics. Our aim is for every child to approach the assessments feeling well prepared, confident and ready to succeed, while continuing to enjoy a broad, balanced and enriching curriculum with a focus on their well-being.
Homework
We believe that regular practice at home helps children consolidate learning and prepare for secondary school.
Reading
Children should read for 10–15 minutes every evening to continue developing fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.
Spellings
Weekly spellings are sent home every Friday and are tested the following Friday.
Times Tables
Regular practice using Times Tables Rock Stars helps children maintain fluency with multiplication facts and supports wider mathematical learning.
Grammar
Children regularly use SPAG.com to reinforce grammar, punctuation and spelling skills learned in class.
Educational Visits and Enrichment
Learning is enriched through a wide range of educational visits and memorable experiences throughout the year.
As part of our local history studies, children visit the Harris Museum in Preston and explore the history of Kirkham's cotton mills, investigating what life was like for factory workers and how the cotton industry helped shape our local community.
A highlight of Year 6 is the opportunity to take part in our residential visit, where children experience exciting outdoor activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, orienteering and team-building challenges. This unforgettable experience helps develop independence, resilience, confidence and friendships as children prepare for the transition to secondary school.
Throughout the year, children also enjoy a range of visitors and enrichment opportunities that help bring learning to life.
