The Intent of our MFL Curriculum
At Kirkham & Wesham Primary School, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum aims to develop confident and independent language learners. We aim to inspire a love of languages and foster a cultural appreciation of the wider world.
Our curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive and coherent, with clear progression from Year 3 to Year 6. It ensures that all pupils develop knowledge and skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in French over time.
We aim for pupils to:
- enjoy learning a new language
- communicate with increasing confidence
- develop cultural awareness
- build transferable skills such as memory and problem-solving
The Implementation of our MFL Curriculum
MFL is taught using the Language Angels scheme, which is aligned with the National Curriculum. Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge and skills.
Pupils are taught:
- listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
- vocabulary and grammar in context
- pronunciation and phonics
- cultural understanding
Lessons are interactive and engaging, with opportunities for repetition, practice and application of language.
Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND, through scaffolding, task variation and targeted support.
Assessment
Assessment in MFL is used to monitor pupil progress and inform teaching.
Teachers use ongoing formative assessment during lessons through questioning, observation and pupil responses to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching.
End of unit assessments are used to check pupils’ understanding of key vocabulary and language structures.
Progress is monitored through:
- pupil work
- teacher assessment
- pupil discussion
Assessment information is used to identify gaps in learning and ensure all pupils make progress.
The Impact of our MFL Curriculum
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will:
- communicate using simple spoken and written French
- understand and respond to basic spoken language
- demonstrate confidence, fluency and accuracy
- show an appreciation of French language and culture
- be prepared for further language learning at secondary school
Our MFL curriculum ensures that all pupils leave KWPS with a positive attitude to language learning and a greater understanding of the wider world.
