PSHE at KWPS
Subject Leader: Miss J Scott
What PSHE Looks Like at KWPS:
-
EYFS: Learning through play, discussion, stories and circle time – recorded in a class floor book.
-
KS1 & KS2: Taught weekly through structured lessons, discussions, drama, writing, debates and themed days.
-
Enrichment: NSPCC, online safety (Digital Matters), Bikeability, and charity events.
-
Assemblies: Focused on key themes linked to PSHE, SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) and British Values.
-
Cross-curricular links: Through Science, PE, RE, Computing and DT.
-
Inclusive practice: All pupils access the PSHE curriculum. Content is adapted sensitively to reflect gender, culture, and family backgrounds.
We also provide support through our Bee-Hive Nurture Room and a dedicated nurture leader, working with families and children who may need additional emotional support.
The Intent of our PSHE Curriculum
At Kirkham & Wesham Primary School, PSHE is a key part of our commitment to creating a welcoming, caring and aspirational environment, where children can believe in themselves and grow into confident, responsible individuals.
Our aims:
✔ Foster confidence, resilience, and kindness
✔ Teach about mental and physical health
✔ Prepare children for modern life
✔ Promote respect and tolerance
The Implementation of our PSHE Curriculum
We follow the PSHE Association’s thematic curriculum, covering:
-
Autumn – Relationships
-
Spring – Living in the Wider World
-
Summer – Health and Wellbeing
Each year group builds on previous learning, covering topics such as:
-
Friendships and family
-
Online and offline safety
-
Emotional resilience and mental health
-
Puberty and growing up (from Year 4)
-
Economic well-being and careers
-
Rights, responsibilities and British Values
Assessment
Assessment in PSHE is used to support pupils’ personal development and understanding.
Teachers use ongoing formative assessment through discussion, observation and pupil reflection to assess understanding and identify next steps.
Progress is monitored through:
- pupil voice
- class discussions
- teacher observations
Assessment is used to ensure pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for life beyond school.
The Impact of our PSHE Curriculum
By the end of KS2, our pupils will:
✔ Know how to stay safe and healthy
✔ Understand their emotions and relationships
✔ Show resilience and respect
✔ Be ready for the challenges of secondary school
Ultimately, our PSHE curriculum ensures that all children are happy, healthy, and ready to thrive in the world around them.
What is taught in each year group
Our PSHE curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills from Year 1 to Year 6.
Please see our PSHE Curriculum Overview below for full details of what is taught in each year group.
Progression of Skills
Pupils build on prior learning each year, developing their understanding of relationships, health and wellbeing, and living in the wider world.
National Curriculum Aims for PSHE
It is mandatory for primary schools to teach:
- Relationships Education
- Health Education
Sex education is not required in primary and is not taught at KWPS, although we cover puberty in Years 4–6.
Inclusion and Accessibility
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to be accessible to all pupils. We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of need or background, can fully participate and succeed.
We meet our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 by:
- adapting teaching to meet individual needs
- providing appropriate scaffolding and support
- using a range of strategies to ensure full access to learning
- creating a safe and supportive environment where pupils feel confident to share their views
- maintaining high expectations for all pupils
Teaching is adapted through discussion, modelling and support, ensuring all pupils can engage with sensitive topics in a way that is appropriate to their age and understanding.
