Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At Kirkham & Wesham Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child is able to achieve their full potential and experience success. We believe that all children, regardless of their individual needs or abilities, are entitled to a broad, balanced and inclusive education within a supportive and nurturing environment.
High-quality teaching, adapted to meet the needs of all learners, is the first step in responding to pupils who may have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). While this will meet the needs of the majority of pupils, some children may require provision that is additional to or different from that provided for their peers. We will use our best endeavours to ensure that appropriate support and provision are put in place to meet identified needs and enable every child to make progress.
At Kirkham & Wesham Primary School, we are guided by the principles set out in the SEND Code of Practice and are committed to the following:
• Every teacher is a teacher of pupils with SEND and shares responsibility for their progress and development.
• Children with SEND will have their individual needs identified, understood and supported through appropriate provision.
• The views, wishes and feelings of children will be sought, valued and taken into account when planning support.
• Parents and carers play a vital role in their child's education and will be fully involved in decision-making and partnership working.
• Pupils with SEND will have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, including the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum.
• Children with SEND will be supported to develop confidence, independence and resilience, enabling them to achieve their personal best.
• The school will work collaboratively with external agencies and professionals where appropriate to ensure pupils receive the support they need.
• Pupils with medical needs, disabilities or additional barriers to learning will be supported to access all aspects of school life.
• Children who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) will receive appropriate support to ensure they can fully access learning and achieve their potential.
Our aim is to create an inclusive learning environment where all children feel valued, respected and able to participate fully in school life. Through strong partnerships between pupils, families, staff and external agencies, we strive to ensure every child can flourish academically, socially and emotionally.
